What are Pervasive Developmental Disorders?

Disturbances in communication and language have an effect on the acquisition of cognitive and socio-affective competencies which are developed, largely, in the school environment. Therefore, fitting the educational response to these pupils’ specific difficulties as early as possible is fundamental. These difficulties are as follows:

  • Difficulty in development and use of oral language: delay in speech or language, Specific Language Impairment (SLI), Dysphemia, Selective Mutism…
  • Disturbance in communication and in the development of basic social skills, as well as difficulty in the acquisition of language: Semantic-Pragmatic Disorder, High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome…
  • Pupils who, though they do not meet the criteria for diagnosis of the other categories, show difficulty in the acquisition of communicative and linguistic skills, and in social interaction.
